  1. Hey everyone We are currently trying to see if we can write a Niche book, together with an author! The story is about Nara, Adam's sister, who is left behind on Home Islands after Adam is kidnapped by a blue birds. Would really love to hear your opinion about these first few pages. Chapter 1Nara jumped up on the large log which protected the nest from the wind. It was only the beginning of autumn, yet the air was already cold. Too cold. The branches of the trees above her were moving in the breeze. Red leaves fell around her like rain. She took a look at the group of Nichelings below. They were pawing at the pile of purple berries between them. One of the older tribe members pushed some towards a cub.“Where is Adam?” Nara asked.“He left when the sun was high,” the oldest of the tribe replied, who was called Tala.“Do you know where he went?”“No. He didn’t say.”Nara growled. She loved her brother dearly, but sometimes he really got on her nerves. They were not supposed to go out on their own. Sure, they were older than most of the other cubs, but it was still dangerous. Cubs didn’t go out on their own.“We don’t have enough food for tomorrow,” Nara said. “I will look for some up on the cliffs.”She wasn’t supposed to go out on her own either, but sometimes it was necessary. Especially now, when there was so little food. Tala bared her fangs as she licked the purple berry juice from her fur. It was a warm brown, covered in stripes, which made it easy to hide in the grass. All of them shared this colour, some lighter, some darker.“Be careful, Nara.”“Always,” she replied with a toothy smile.“I wouldn’t advise on leaving the cover of the trees,” Tala remarked. “It’s too dangerous alone.”Nara nodded as she went. It took her about an hour to reach the cliffs behind the forest. She knew from experience that small animals lived out here, just under the ground. They were called stagmoles and were just what they needed. Nara wasn’t the best in sniffing them out, and in fact none of her tribe had a very good nose… but she could hear them scurry around underground. With her large ears close to the ground, she advanced carefully.Even when she was alone, Nara was always careful to be silent. She set her cushioned paw on a stone without a sound. With so many dry leaves and sticks, it wasn’t easy to be quiet, but Nara was very good at sneaking. There it was! She could hear them… and just behind a small patch of grass she saw the horns of a stagmole poke out, facing away from her. Her mouth watered. She hadn’t had any food all day. Nara readied herself. In one long jump she pounced on the unaware creature, catching it neatly before it retreated into its burrow. One stagmole wasn’t much, but it was something. She sat down to catch her breath and looked up at the setting sun. It would be dark soon and she needed to be home in time. But before that… She lowered her head to bite into it. It smelled great… “Hey there!”Nara jumped in shock, her fur standing up. She looked around to see…“Adam!” she shouted in frustration. “Don’t creep up on me like that!”He’d snuck up on her, as was his specialty. Adam jumped over and poked at the stagmole with his paw.“What?” he said, bratty as always. “Are you mad I caught you sneaking a quick snack?”“I wasn’t sneaking a snack. I was hunting,” she said and looked down at the small animal under her paws. “Wanted to bring some of them back. There isn’t enough food.”Adam hummed and it sounded like a purr. He looked up to the sky, which was turning orange in the sunset. “So that’s why you came all the way out here,” he said.Nara nodded and growled. She’d chosen the cliffs because it was too far away for the old and very young to go to. In the forest and grasslands around the nest they had collected all ripe berries already. There wasn’t much left since they grew so slowly. Stagmoles were much harder to catch than berries… Maybe they would have to move the nest again soon.“Why are you here?” she asked.“The same reason,” Adam answered. “I’ve already hunted some of them. The stash is hidden under a rock near the cliff edge. We can carry it back together.”“Tala says it’s going to be cold tonight. The wind is already freezing. We need to bring back a lot more than a few. Maybe we can’t go out tomorrow if it is too cold.”“Then we have to look for more.”“I’ll do it,” Nara offered.“We shouldn’t be going out alone…”Nara laughed. “And what did you do today? Go ahead, carry yours back. I’ll be right behind. Bringing more than you ever could.”“You don’t have to see everything as a challenge, sister,” Adam replied.“Fine,” Nara relented. She brushed her head past Adam’s. “I love you, you idiot.”“Love you too,” he replied with a grin that showed off his sharp fangs. She watched him bound away. He ran along the cliffs to a stack of rocks just at the edge in the distance. Ah, he had hidden the food in their old spot. The one their parents had shown them so many moons ago. As he jumped up on the stones, Adam’s fur shone in a bright orange in the sunset.Nara huffed. Showoff. She lowered her head to eat the stagmole after all. Her gaze fell on the single gem on her chest, which sparkled in a vibrant green in the setting sun. Suddenly the colours were swallowed by darkness as a shadow passed over her. Nara almost choked on the meat she was chewing. She spat out the rest and cleared her throat.“Adam!” she howled. “Above you!”He didn’t hear her—he was already too far away. She could see him on the rocks in the distance, running away alone. Nara watched the sky in horror. The sunlight was briefly blocked out by a pair of gigantic wings. For a moment it was as if night had already fallen.“Adam!” she shouted again. “Hide! Adam!”Nara observed him bounce ahead of the shadow and gnashed her teeth. She had to help him! Her powerful legs pushed her forward. She was a good runner, almost as fast as Adam. Claws dug into the ground to give her more speed. It was foolish. She would make herself a target too, in the open like this. The bird of prey didn’t seem to have seen her yet, but if she kept running like this… Adam disappeared behind some bushes. The bird circled around again, its large eyes clearly searching for food. Then, with a screech it opened its talons and dove down towards the ground. Nara’s heart almost stopped. She ran as fast as she could, but she was too late.“Adam!” she screamed. The bird of prey took off again, right in front of her eyes, Adam clutched in its talons, shouting in fear. For a moment she could see it clearly. Two wings, dark blue against the sky. A pair of claws almost as large as Adam’s body. A curved beak screeching in victory. A yellow eye glinting in the light. Then it was gone, rising into the sky, turning away with powerful flaps of its gigantic wings. With it, Adam was gone.“No…” Nara cried. “No!”She ran after the shadow, along the cliff. Her eyes were clouded with tears. She ran and ran… until there was no more ground to follow it. She stopped at the very edge of the cliff, high up over the ocean which surrounded their island. In the distance the wings of the bird grew smaller. She tried to see if Adam was still in its claws, but it was already too far away. The large birds hadn’t come to their island for so long. They had thought they were safe. Stupid. You were never safe. Not when you were alone.Nara stared after the dot in the sky until it disappeared in the clouds. She remained motionless for a long while, tears running through her fur as night fell.

  3. Hello, I've recently joined the forums although I've been playing Niche for I don't even know how long, and have 200+ hours on Steam. I have no idea what I'm really going to be posting (probably just gameplay) but I thought I'd introduce myself here anyway. So, here I am, finally joining the forums after years of playing. Hello again!

  9. She decides to go looking for them. Not to far away she find the little one on the port. She moves closer. Rain lands on their uncovered back and head, drenching them cold water. It's only a bit small than Daisy, and from here she can hear their sort whimpers and see their shivering body. There must be some way she can comfort it. Carefuly she takes out some of the stag-mole Baba had caught and offers it to the beayena child. They moves in closer and slowly Daisy brings them closer to her, sheltering it from the rain. Dispite being the one getting drenched, Daisy doesn't feel cold or wet. A smile breaks on her face. 'I wonder what we're gonna call you.'

  10. Daisy, left all alone with her sleeping comrades, feels a sense of guilt. There must be something she can do about that kid, right?

  11. Another rainy day. This time the child is gone. After fighting so hard, Nina and Baba are bummed out. Nina goes to lie beside the rock, curled right up to Baba. (and a dodo bird. Nice and warm)

  14. Next day the bearyena moves away from Baba and singles out Nina. Perhaps it can sense the ansetory. But seriously, Nina doesn't need more head injuries.

  15. Nina waddles back on shore. 'Ugh, I was having such a good t- WOAH. What is that?!' 'It's a bearyena. Now go fight it.' 'Huh? I always thought they were pink.' 'Why pink?' 'Beats me.' Then she shouts, 'CHARGE!' And attacks from behind.

  16. But as Daisy dashes to the port she spots something small. 'What the heck? A baby?' Daisy calls out to Nina in the water, happily swimming around for clams.

  17. All is fine, but in the morning a beast emerges from the grasses! 'Get Nina!' Baba yells, knowing she can't defeat a grown bearyena by herself. Daisy won't be much use with being all small and rabbil like, so her best bet is the mad horned child.

  18. Nina sniffs around the port. It's covered in a strange wet scent, unlike any she knows. Surely there can't be any clams around- Holy mama

  19. Daisy starts collecting the food but runs into some... bugs? This island is so weird. After munching, Daisy takes a bath in one of the near by puddles Baba digs up some roots.

  21. They should start gathering food before they leave. Baba couldn't smell any berries coming from that port, at least, not edible ones.

  23. They havn't been on this island long, and although it hasn't been as kind to them as they'd hoped, there's still a lot to explore. Nina decides to explore the port further. She's never seem blue plants like this. oooo clam too

  25. @FawnCat I don't really know yet ^^ If at all possible a hard copy would be awesome I think. Our current plan is to see if we can find a publisher and if not (or if we're not happy with the offered conditions), we would most likely crowdfund the book. Which would probably include tiers for both digital and physical copies of the book.

  26. Yes, I'll be dumping all the nichelings that I think look cool here. I've been running into a lot of beautiful babies lately and I have the need to dump them somewhere, and also I don't have much else to do so ye. My standards for notable nichelings are very low, so I get very excited over the tiniest things and there will probably be quite a few. The title says Applesauce's notable Nichelings, but don't hesitate to throw your own in here

  27. Your starter Nichelings are the last few of their species- thankfully they were male and female and could breed. The island they were on was just a bit too severe for the rest of the tribe. The remaining Nichelings could thrive in it, however. But due to them being forced out of their species' niche, they have to move to a new island sooner or later. SETUP Your starter Nichelings can look however you want. The only requirement for them is that they must be suited for the island you pick for them. For example, you start on a snow island. They need to have either Big Body or Heat Body, and cannot have something that lowers their cold resistance, like Big Ears (They can have unfitting recessive genes though). Age settings can be whatever you like, as well as pregnancy duration. Enable All Genes Unlocked. Everything else us up to you. RULES You must get off the starting island within 20 days. If you fail to do so, you cannot collect food until you get to another island. When moving to a new island, you have to stay there until the majority of the young population is suited to the environment. And by suited, I don't mean they just have Lean Body. I mean that they have a full set of dominant genes that go for the environment. (example: Lean Body, Big Ears, Insect Collecting for savannah islands) After your Nicheling's young population is suited to a new environment, use a random number generator (0-10). If it rolls between 0 and 5, you have no penalty. Wait 10 days before rolling again. If you roll between 6 and 7, there is a sickness spreading. Give a Nicheling of your choosing (that isn't far away from others) the status effect sleeping sickness or common cold. Roll again once no one has it anymore. If you roll between 8 and 10, then another species has seized your role in the ecosystem. You have 15 days to leave the island. If you fail to leave in 15 days, you cannot collect food until you leave. No inviting wanderers or rouges. They are considered as a different species of Nicheling to your tribe. If you do breed with one, set the child's fertility to infertile with console commands. Same thing with Bearyena hybrids. Since this may cause inbreeding problems, you are allowed to change immunity genes with console commands if you're in a pinch. Since your tribe is supposed to be it's own species, give it some extra rules! Like, "Males of this species of Nicheling leave the female after breeding. If he happens to find her again while still caring for their offspring, he may attack them." or "This species of Nicheling has no parental instinct. Once offspring are born, the parents leave them." Going further with the previous rule, give your Nichelings a defined diet. You CANNOT start as an omnivore. If your diet is too hard in your current biome, you can switch diets. The time for transitioning between diets are: Herbivore --> Carnivore (5 days without collecting food) Carnivore --> Herbivore (6 days without collecting food) Herbivore/Carnivore --> Omnivore ( 8 days without collecting food ) Omnivore --> Herbivore/Carnivore ( 1 day without collecting food ) Alright, that's it! Show me your playthroughs, or your "Species rules". I'm looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with.

  36. The Aftermath (147-149 days in) Thornbush quickly began expecting a new child. Hopefully they had another child with the gift of fangs. Meanwhile, Snowchaser came down to help Hare escort the rebels. Suddenly- A new rogue had waltzed out of the snowbanks and Pine began expecting her second child. Why does Pine attract all the rogues She slapped him away quickly, but Snowchaser already had an idea on how her child could be used to punish her. Meanwhile, Moose had been contained by his sister and Sakura. He tried to reason with Forest, but in the teen's eyes, he was dead to her; just another foolish rebel. She didn't want to be related to Moose if he was willing to hurt his their grandfather, who was inching closer to his demise. Quartz was shoved into a hotspring. The other screenshot I had for this day vanished, but it was just Snowchaser escorting Pine some more. He's planning to use a Rockfall punishment for her child (will be seen when she does have her child). Suddenly, the tribe's greatest nightmare creature loomed over Quartz. Dammit At the same time, a ranfox lunged towards Hare and Snowchaser. It took them about three seconds to decide what they wanted to do. Snowchaser wanted to destroy all the ramfoxes on this island and then some. For Voidwalker- and for Kira, although they had their differences. Well. Mostly Voidwalker. Kira had always been a bit cold, but a great contributor to the tribe. As much as he wanted to leave behind the Rockfall ways, he found it hard to not seek revenge. Or punish Pine like how the Rockfalls would. More specifically, the legendary-ancient queen of the Rockfalls, Serpent. As the tribe fled from the balance bear, someone forgot to keep an eye on two of the local rebels. Sn: "Is everyone here?" S: "Yes." Sn: "What about Quartz and Moose?" Forest and Sakura exchanged an oh-crap look. But it was already too late. Moose and Quartz were already fleeing down the mountain. Quartz took this as a sign that even the balance bears that inhabited the mountain chose her over Hare as a leader, and had let the pair escape. Meanwhile, more ramfoxes began to attack the tribe. Although they were easily fought off, nobody felt that safe anymore; Wikku stayed closer to Almond. Sakura realized how powerful her fur was, and shielded elderly Hare from the rain of ramfoxes. Snowchaser kept an extra-close eye on Pine. Forest stayed beside Hare, who was halfway to death's doorstep, incase the balance bear tried to attack him. But all knew one thing; Pine couldn't hurt them while expecting a child and under strict surveillance. Pine herself felt her hope begin to falter; Quartz and Moose would surely come back for her, right? They might've escaped at her expense, but they're probably forming a plan to rescue her, right? They wouldn't leave her and her child to die at the hands of the Frozen Empire..? They wouldn't betray her.. after she fought alongside them.. After she had protected Quartz.. After she had left Silent for them.. Right?

  37. Darius was named after a Persian king. Anasi's only winged child and only sickly one. Thanks to an abundance of healing fruits he's managed to live a pretty normal life span and has even had a baby daughter and found a nice family. Hazel (in the middle), Lilac, Hazel's aunt (on the nest), and Lotus, Hazel's mother (to the right). Hazel is Darius's child. She's spotty, just like her father. She's 25% wanderer, 50% tribe (idk what else to call it), and 25% bearyena. I LOVE this boy. He looks as through he has panda pattern
