  1. Well, there are 4 (I think) different ear types in the game. All of them are upright ears. You're suggesting that fluffy ears would be upright too, right? It's just that if these were implemented and designed like you suggested, there would be 5 upright ears. I just thought floppy ears or something similar would be a nice change.

  2. Alright, so I've seen some suggests asking for some type of creature creator/demo mode or whatever. I have been working on this for a while and I thought I'd make a new post since there's a lot more than just "A demo mode". This is gonna be mostly made up of pictures from what I call "Tutorial Mode" and I'll leave a link to a page with pictures without the text from tutorial mode. So first you can access this mode from the home screen like so: And then you would start at the creature creator (and to turn on tutorial mode you do this first (tutorial mode can be either be functional just with the yellow text or an example that goes away after you click)): Which can take you to either the creature list or the select mate screens which look like (also note that the scroll on the right on all screens is not accurate, and is just there to display its existence): (Where you can import creatures from save files like this: ) And confirming a breed brings you to the offspring list which is: Where there are trait statistics and custom filters (list of traits made by @Aysling here: https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/626-nicheling-sort-filter-and-select/&page=0#comment-2030) : Or you can go to the punnett square: And from anything outside of the creature lists, you can go to the gem colors (which you can find individually here: https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/646-customizable-and-programmable-gem-colors/) And the color cycle looks like this: And after all of that, you could use the creatures you used to start in sandbox mode like this: (Picture in production) So yea, that's all of it. Please let me know of any mistakes I might have made since this was a lot or of any logical inconsistencies. If you want to see the pictures without the text from tutorial mode, you can go to this link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16dVKParfTHqHpSsuPD_UA_6cozEJ94_4Wtxpff6lIsE/edit?usp=sharing

  3. Hello all! I thought I would share a gene idea: Bat Head. We don't currently have a counter for the sleepy flies on the swamp islands, so I thought I would think of something to combat that. If a nicheling has a bat head, it is able to collect the flies as a food source since bats usually feed on insects. This head would disable ears and provide a high hearing ability. Bats are fantastic at detecting possible prey through echolocation. Basically, the bat hears echos from it's ultrasound vocalization (squeaks) and is able to track prey through that, hence the idea of a high hearing ability. Here's a little drawing I did in order to visualize what the head might possibly look like. Thanks for looking!

  4. I think this is a super cute idea so I tried to edit what they might look like onto a nicheling model, thoughts?

  5. I always have my nichelings constantly gathering food, unless they're heading towards a new island. It results in there usually being over 1000 food. In some of my tribes I am extremely strict and have them be territorial, killing all wanderers who enter their territory. But some will just accept the wanderers even if they won't be breeding. For each generation, I choose some of my favourite creatures to be breeders. Often it'll be a bunch of females just with one male. I'll breed them until I get what I want from them, and compatible pairs in the next generation. The ones who I do not decide to breed immediately will go out and do exploring and collecting, same with retired breeders. Problem is some I get attached to and want to breed. I enjoy adding story to the creatures, so I had one who was hunting bunnies to impress a female, unfortunately I then realized they shared an immunity gene. But then his older brother who had been risking his life fighting the ape (I wasunlucky enough to get an ape tree on a grass mingle island), he had arrived and had a few babies with the female so the younger brother kept angrily hunting bunnies. So I do include a lot of story into the tribe, but i'll still make sure they can survive.

  6. Ahh, Knew about the tails, didn't know this one would only be good for males. A good first step then! Would still be neat to be able to assign existing genes to a sex, but one step at a time

  7. Here we go searching through my thousands upon thousands of Niche screenshots ^^ Of course I can't share all of my favourite creatures but here are some

  13. Hi I'll go ahead and start My name is Philomena. I was born and raised in Zurich, Switzerland. I still live there and run a game studio together with @Micha @Markus and @Roger. In my freetime I love to read books and Manga. Every Monday I'm going to a Japanese class with Micha and Markus. I want to read japanese Mangas at some point! I used to have pets, but right now I have none. We travel around a lot and I don't want to leave them alone too much. It's hard to fight down my urge to get a Shiba Inu though >_< In summer I love to go swimming and in winter I'm a huge couch potato. Then, I love to watch series such as Steven Universe, MLP, animes, etc etc. How about you guys?

  15. Hey all! Here's a little poll created to see what animals we all prefer here. Thanks for looking!

  16. So, gem colors are great but are kinda limiting with just five colors. This isn't the biggest change or the most important but I think it'd be cool and nice to have. This idea is also incorporated with another idea here: So to do it, the home screen would look like so: And upon opening it you get a screen like so: and to explain it:

  17. I think it would be great to have more settings for the sandbox mode. For example toggle buttons for all predator types (want to remove rogue males? Just switch them off). Maybe we could also define stuff like "Maximal tribe size" to add some extra challenge or "Maxium age of animals" so our critters can live longer. Or maybe even some special rules like "Only one male allowed in the pack" or "Tribe can only eat meat".

  18. It annoys me a little that you're able to see fish on your vision sensors and find underwater dig sites only if you're standing next to them, but unable to see them when entering the smell/hearing screens. So as a solution that's both realistic and useful game-wise, I think the platypus beak and gills should be able to detect electric currents in the water. A platypus' beak has a whole bunch of sensors in them that allow them to utilize "electroreception," which just means they can sense electric currents to locate prey. Sharks also share this type of "sixth sense" in their snouts, which also helps make them excellent predators! I figured this change would work much like smell or hearing would, entering the screen would put a green highlight around prey (or predator), entities in the nearby tiles. It would make it easier to find dig sites for our platypus-beaked nichelings rather than the current method of hoping-you-happen-to-be-right-next-to-it. Maybe for the cases of fish, where there's no grass or anything that really "blocks" your sight of them, the electric currents can leave a trail outside your current sight-range that's stronger the closer you are to the schools of fish, and grows weaker (and eventually disappearing completely), the further away you are. It would also be an ability exclusive to the platypus beak and gills which would make them much more valuable to shoot for when making a water-dwelling tribe!

  19. Ever wanted to know what your most common immunities are, or how many animals have a fang gene? There isn't a quick way to do that in game. This panel would allow you to view important statistics at a glance - and double-click on a Nicheling's name to select them. This panel would be accessible by clicking on the 'Animals' wedge in the bottom right corner. It allows for sorting by name, age, sex, and many different genes. By default, only Name, Age, and Sex are shown. Clicking the 'Sort/Filter' in the top right-hand corner opens the second panel and allows you to add other attributes like immunities, colors, and snouts. Clicking one of these options opens the third panel, allowing you to select options to filter the results by. Double-clicking an animal's name closes the panel and auto-selects the animal. The panel can also be closed via the X in the top left corner. Example of alphabetical sort: All the various sortable categories: Only Nichelings that have either a 'B' or 'Home' immunity will be shown!

  20. So in real life, there are all sorts of traits that exist in one sex but not the other. Bulls have horns while cows don't, male lions have manes, peacocks have bright feathers while the females have plain ones, etc. i think it'd be awesome if we could do the same thing here, perhaps as an unlockable feature if your creatures survive to a high enough generation. I imagine it would sort of be like an extra circle in the nicheling's gene tab that would appear blank, maybe even have two of them, one with the male symbol, and one with the female symbol. You can select these genes and you'll be pulled into the mutation menu, where you can assign any gene to be passed on to the next generation as you normally would. but in this situation if you apply "Ram Horns" to the male circle, and "Black fur" to the female circle, then only the creature's male children will be born with Ram Horns and the like. For the offspring of these creatures, i'd imagine that these gene tabs would be already filled in based on what the parents had. if the creature's mother had Ram horns in the male slot, and it's father had Claw in the male slot, then this creature would likely have a 50-50 chance on wich male gene it acquired and could pass on to it's offsprig. Regardless of the gender of the offspring, the offspring would still carry the gene for the opposite sec (So our male nicheling would still carry the female "Black fur" gene, but just not express it, possibly even having bright white fur itself.) this would allow these genes to be passed on to future generations still. With this in effect, you could set up new social structures and adaptations. You could make sure that your females always come equipped with a nimble-fingers paw to assist in food gathering, and you can have your males always have Ram Horns both for cosmetics and help them fight in the wild while out hunting or the like. New creatures invited into the tribe would likely have blank sex-gene slots that you could fill in after inviting them, or possibly randomly filled in slots that you need to adapt too or breed out when introduced to your own bloodline. Rogue males would likely also have randomly filled slots with negative genes. just thought this would help keep things interesting throughout the game, and it could help with some situations where it's difficult to tell the males from the females (Such as those with Bearyena head) AND allow you to still have multiple different gene types without your nichelings having wildly different genes. (I.e. you could have big-nose females who still posses double poison-fang genes to pass on to their male offspring, thus you don't need to worry about loosing poison fangs because of the big nose, etc.) i write too much. sorry.

  21. 1st picture: This is Iskoko, my Goddess of the Grasses. In all of my tribes she is responsible for the grass that gives them all coverage. When she was young a bearyena killed some of her family, and she escaped because she fled into the tall grass to hide herself. She has been thankful for the grass ever since.(She is also the drawing on my profile Picture) 2nd picture: Kirroku, My god of Hope. When his faction (So i have one big tribe, but then i split that tribe into factions, He was of the Savannah faction, Hence the yellow gems) was still small they took in a wandering female, that female was his mother, and when he was born, his Faction was given the Hope that they will survive. 3rd picture: Rela, My Goddess of Balance. She was the last child born to her parents (Can't remember their names, Sorry) She is the Goddess of balance because since her parents just died, they had no Alpha. And when she gained her second gem, she approched her faction with a firm voice to tell them to stop fighting amongst themselves, or else their beloved faction would cease to exist. She restored balance to her faction and was elected as Alpha in her parents place.

  22. First Image: My current tribe that is descended from the mighty Adam. (I think they're on their 3rd Island since I got Eve) Second Image: My favorite tribe with their magnificent eyebrows and Albinism. :3 Third Image: An old image of one of my first tribes (that no longer exists) where I had 3 sets of twins- 1 identical set and 2 not.( 1 set look almost identical but I just noticed their eye colors are different)

  25. I was wondering if facial hair on nichelings is still planned to be implemented. It did say that if the "Bearded Beaver" got enough backers, it would be in the game. However, I'm not sure if it managed to reach its goal. Does anyone know if it has been confirmed for the game? Thank you for your time Here's the link to what I'm referring to, btw: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/80250451/niche-a-genetics-survival-game/posts/1589166

  26. I'm not ~technically~ a new member, but I'll post here anyways! My name is Dodo (keeping my actual name private for safety reasons) and I was born in Oregon, United States. I still reside there with not many plans to move, but I have strongly considered moving to Sweden, so that may happen later down the line. (the process is long and tedious) I enjoy drawing (I'm a semi professional digital artist) and working with reptiles. I have always been passionate about reptilian species, so I dedicate a lot of time into studying and caring for them. I enjoy watching anime and shows about tattoos and artsy stuff. Basically I'm just a dude with lots of scaly critters and art hanging on the walls lol.

  30. I am currently studying comparitive literature, with some skandinavian studies and german language thrown in there as well though I want to become an author. I also had some trouble deciding what exactly I wanted to study (Biology or something with languages) the fact that I need some math to do biology then made me settle on languages though I am still kind of thinking about maybe switching to biology ^^

  32. Uh... I think what you are suggesting is heterochromia, which means each eye is a different colour. I like this suggestion, however I'm pretty sure heterochromia has zero ties to behaviour or "distemper", so it would be a purely appearance-changing mutation in the game, just like it is in real life, if it were to be implemented.

  33. Fun fact: In a veeery early version of Niche (way before early access) there were noctural animals Now, it would be quite a big rework, since we'd need to rethink all animals that move during night time. I still think it would be awesome though!
