  1. Personally I think that sifting through a large tribe to find mates for your nichelings is the most tedious thing in the game. I'm no game dev so I don't know how easily this would be implemented,, but here is my idea(with visuals wowee!)- The idea is to add another tab to the family tree. you select a given nicheling, click this button/tab, and it will highlight all nichelings of the opposite sex whose immunities are compatible with the selected nicheling's immunity. Here I used a little diamond to show compatible mates but it could be done with another symbol/ect.! this feature would save a LOT of time and tediousness, without removing any challenges. It would also help a lot with maintaining smooth flow.

  3. Right now, I'm working on making a save with all the genetics unlocked and with lots of food so I can just pop in and chill out and make cool little creatures, I would love so so much to be able to set a food amount and unlock specific genetics (maybe you have to have unlocked them at least once before in something like story mode or the current sandbox?) and just start working on making purple eyed, spotty, poisoned fang creatures with fluffy tails. Creatures made in the custom sandbox probably shouldn't count towards things like trait specific achievements though

  4. before we start, Credit to @ILovePunz on twitter for the idea of "Lava body" and "Fire body" credit to me for "Stegosaurus body LAVA BODY: Lava body is a special gene that is only found on Paradise island, and can be unlocked by burning an animal 35 times. The body cannot be placed in water without taking 1 damage. creatures within 2 tiles become warm or even hot, and creatures within 1 tile take 2 damage after passing a day. They can reproduce, but only with eachother. Babies cannot burn other animals. The burning applies to all other living animals. Birds cannot pick them up. They cannot overheat, they cannot freeze, and they cannot burn. they melt snow/ice from the tile below them, next to them, and the tiles around the tiles next to them. EXTREMELY RESCESSIVE. they can be attacked, but cause damage to the attacker. FIRE BODY Fire body is also special, but can be found on savannas (spawn in fires) and can be unlocked after burning 25 times. Fire body can become to cold, and cause the fire to die. this will harm your nicheling. they cannot overheat, and cannot burn. they only hurt nichelings who stay next to them for 2 days. they can reproduce with any nicheling. Babies cannot burn, and cannot be picked up by the bird. they can be attacked, but cause damage to the attacker. They melt snow/ice like heat body does. cannot be placed in water for more than 2 turns without taking damage. EXTREMELY RESCESSIVE. STEGOSAURUS BODY: An ice gene that is unlocked by finding it, works similar to spiky body. The body can do anything a normal spiky body can do, (defending birds, causing damage to attackers with no defense, etc) but have 1 heat resistance, and are found in ice blocks. equally rescessive to armoured body, and cannot be found on wanderers. they also allow the tail gene, so if you want spiky bodies and tails stego body is for you! Hope you guys like it! Go check out @ILovePunz on twitter and thank her for the idea of the bodies. Please vote up if you enjoy it!

  5. oh man, look at that! :0 (also, your UI design looks p nice too! it's actually p good to see different ideas for how it could look) ALSO, I noticed that you also added a thingo to show the creature's age- which another absurdly useful little thing to have! (esp when preparing to travel to a new island)

  9. I'm fairly new to niche, but I would also love this! I play on both my main computer and a laptop that is nowhere near as high spec and to be able to play such a pretty version without potentially melting my laptop would be fantastic!

  10. I think that shields would be a very good opportunity to create relevant gameplay choices. Taking some inspiration from Overwatch's variety of shield-centered skills, having some variety could really create interesting choices: Basic Shield: 360 degree, medium radius, health-based with low idle energy consumption, higher energy consumption to refill when damaged. Antimatter Shield: 360 degree, medium radius, can absorb any amount of damage, but extremely high energy consumption. Perfect to block huge damage spikes. Energy Barrier: ~135 degree wall, big radius, health-based. substantially beefier than the basic shield. Can only regenerate when not taking damage for at least ~1 second. Well suited for short to medium defense periods against directed attacks. These are just examples - the basic idea would be to play around with shape/coverage, idle/active energy consumption, damage negation models (health-based, infinite absorption, reflection etc.) and other values to create a range of interesting choices.

  11. Alright, so I've seen some suggests asking for some type of creature creator/demo mode or whatever. I have been working on this for a while and I thought I'd make a new post since there's a lot more than just "A demo mode". This is gonna be mostly made up of pictures from what I call "Tutorial Mode" and I'll leave a link to a page with pictures without the text from tutorial mode. So first you can access this mode from the home screen like so: And then you would start at the creature creator (and to turn on tutorial mode you do this first (tutorial mode can be either be functional just with the yellow text or an example that goes away after you click)): Which can take you to either the creature list or the select mate screens which look like (also note that the scroll on the right on all screens is not accurate, and is just there to display its existence): (Where you can import creatures from save files like this: ) And confirming a breed brings you to the offspring list which is: Where there are trait statistics and custom filters (list of traits made by @Aysling here: https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/626-nicheling-sort-filter-and-select/&page=0#comment-2030) : Or you can go to the punnett square: And from anything outside of the creature lists, you can go to the gem colors (which you can find individually here: https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/646-customizable-and-programmable-gem-colors/) And the color cycle looks like this: And after all of that, you could use the creatures you used to start in sandbox mode like this: (Picture in production) So yea, that's all of it. Please let me know of any mistakes I might have made since this was a lot or of any logical inconsistencies. If you want to see the pictures without the text from tutorial mode, you can go to this link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16dVKParfTHqHpSsuPD_UA_6cozEJ94_4Wtxpff6lIsE/edit?usp=sharing

  13. You know those flower tiles on ports leading to easy islands? Wouldn't it be fun to have them on easy islands as normal tiles? We have the clovers in mountain biome, why not have flowers in grassland? ☘️ They would not be covered in grass, but maybe they could grow around berrybushes too. These flowers wouldn't serve any other purpose than to look pretty, but it would be nice to at least have them.

  14. I Miss the satellite designs that were possible in the demo, it allowed for compact and complex designs to be made. I understand it brings some of the challenges out of the game, but I feel like it would work if you could toggle it and then features like world progression and resource collection would be disabled. The challenge is still there but it allows the satellite build to come back. I might just be an idiot and there might be a way to do the satellite build that I don't know about. If there is please tell me.

  16. I have played Niche since its early access version 0.0.7 so I have seen a lot and I fell in love with the old grafics (no not the experimental branch ones. The original ones ^^). I would love to have an optional package where we can play with the current game mechanics and just the old textures (I wouldn't even mind if you made it a dlc we had to pay a bit for). I think that would be also useful for users who don't have such a strong grafics card. Would love to hear your thoughts on that idea

  17. So, the other day I decided on trying to create another exciting Niche world with Storymode. I figured that it'd be quite relaxing to play, since normally I challenge myself with hard islands right off the bat. So I make it all the way to having Eve join the tribe, as usual, and then they have three babies, all female, which is totally fine. Then, I move over to the next island. More and more babies are born, one after another, all female. At this point I'm desperate to have a boy, as my only male is Adam and there are no wild creatures to be found. Only two days left, and then another girl is born. Last day alive, female. I'm left with not a single male in the tribe. Since I had to force breeding at the end to hope for a boy, some of my creatures are dying of starvation. And then... a blessing arrived. This strange, spiky-bodied male shows up out of the blue, deformed paw and all, ready to breed with my first-born who he matches up perfectly with, and, happens to be the one that found him in the first place. Wow. This is what everything looked like. Eight females, and then our precious make on the left. Dreams really do come true. It was so fun seeing this all happen! (P.S. sorry for all of the warrior cat-themed names, I was doing this with my younger cousins, and they wanted to choose some warrior names, lol. Gingerstar on the far right of the second picture is the creature that found our lovely male. :))

  18. If you have played the legend of Zelda, you probably know about the multiple races in the kingdom of Hyrule. The water dwelling zora, the strong and rocky gorons, the rito that soar the skies, the woman of the gerudo tribe, the ninja like sheikah and the normal hylians. In this challenge, the goal is to make a nicheling tribe with families that represent these races. At least you need a group that represents the hylians, one for the gorons, one for the zora and one for the rito. The gerudo and sheikah are optional. Requirements: Hylians: The easiest to make, just average looking nichelings, nothing special. Brown or beige fur is preferred. Gorons: Two options, this faction can consist of bearyena nichelings with big body or armor body, or nichelings with all prehistoric genes except for wings, and saber snout, digging trunk, and mega horns are not mandatory. Dark brown fur is preferred. Zora: Water dwelling nichelings. Water body, gills or platypus beak, and beaver tail or tailfin are mandatory, but you can give them even more water genes in you want. White fur is preferred. Rito: Wings and bird beak or platypus beak are the only mandatory genes for them. Gerudo: This one is harder because this faction can only have one male, while all others are female. They require lean body and big ears to distinguish them from the hylians. Yellow fur is preferred. Sheikah: Like the hylians, but they require black or grey fur, lean body and at least one velvet paw. Each faction needs a distinct color to distinguish between them, if you complete this challenge, please post a screenshot here!

  19. in addition realism and cuteness, this could add some extra challenge- young nichelings without fully grown horns wouldn't gain any attack points from their horn genes until the horns finish growing.

  20. smaller, poofier ears would indeed make a lot of sense as cold resistant genes, since real animals which inhabit cold climates tend to have shorter ears and other extremities. also, although floppy ears do only appear IRL in domesticated animals, I do think that such a shape might help with providing cold resistance(like built in earmuffs!), and honestly wouldn't be all that unrealistic for a nicheling considering the existence of feathered wings and scorpion tails.

  22. Maybe add flooding during/after the thunder storms? It would be awesome if they added new weather cause I always thought that the game lacked special or random events that are a huge part of evolution and extinction.

  23. 90!? I can't go above 10 without losing! Anways, I agree that this should have some sort of cost (like the food mentioned above). When you make a large tribe, it's supposed to be challenging to support them all, so it would be kind of OP to be able to send them away without any cost.

  25. one thing, apparently when a nicheling or 12 go on a port to the next island, the stones collapse making the whole thing sink, maybe you can send the amount on tiles on that port until the stones break

  26. Just do what i did in this situation: Start breeding in low-fertility, and adapt your personal play-style to accommodate it. step 1; Low fertility in the mutation menu: Creatures will begin being born with low fertility, meaning less chance of successful pregnancy when breeding. Pregnancy is still possible, but it will take more tries. Every action you spend trying to breed is another resource burned, if you need too, you can have both nichelings spend all their actions attempting to mate for a pseudo-guaranteed child, but they won't be able to do much else on that turn, forcing you to slow down and consider how many tries is too many. Step 2; Try to maintain a "Every other turn" policy. If babies were born on Turn 1. Make sure that no pregnant females are on nests during turn 2. They can sit on nests on turn 3 however. This will effectively cut your reproduction rate in half. Step 3; Wait for death. Keep an eye on your total population, I've been keeping mine hovering at around 200 by making sure that new babies are only ever born when older adults finally pass on. And step 4: Accept expend-ability. When you have so many nichelings you don't know what to do with them, they start to become more expendable and unnecessary. Use this to your advantage, send a group of unimpressive nichelings to tackle apes or explore the oceans, experiment with locking a small group away from the rest and introducing some new genes to allow speciation to take effect. take some risks you normally wouldn't take. When you have two hundred creatures, loosing ten or so isn't going to be the end of the world. If you're really brave, you could start intentionally breeding creatures with double-up immunities. Half the lifespan means faster deaths, meaning less time waiting for the next generation.

  27. I think the movable thorn bushes sound like tumbleweeds. Perhaps they could be added to the savannah biome (or a desert biome if it ever comes). Tumbleweeds are plants that, to spread their seeds long distances across the windy, open environment they live in, shed their entire overground part and allows that to tumble in the wind and slowly degrade, releasing the seeds/spores at many intervals. Perhaps you could roll the tumbleweed to wherever you want and secure it using building material to form a defense. However, after a little research, I found no precedence of animals (besides humans) purposely making structures out of thorny bushes for defense. However, some birds do nest in thorny bushes, and may even prefer to, probably for the extra protection against predators.

  28. I think that idea is very interesting and would be a convenient way to get rid of unwanted nichlings. However, it might also be a bit op since the issues that come along with overcrowding are meant to be one of the challenges of expanding your pack. I think there should be a price in food for sending a nichling away since it takes time to find new food on the island. Since you start with 2 nichlings and 20 food, having 10 food per nichling sent away makes sense, though that would be a heavy price, but if you have a useless nichling that would just be a food sink for all its life, that price might be worth it. It would also be cool if, when you send a creature away to an island and then travel to that island later, you could see that nichling there!

  36. I really like your idea for adding a blur effect in smell mode. I think that would work really well in combination with the high winds suggestion if it is added in, where it moves the location of the creature in scent mode. However, I don't like the idea of leaving nichlings in color - if you have a green poison-body nichling, a yellow nichling, or a red nichling, you could perhaps mistake them for food, an enemy, or a wanderer. The nichling's colors would also distract from finding those things in scent and hearing mode. If the purpose of your second suggestion is to make it easier to find your nichlings in smell or hearing mode, perhaps instead they could be outlined in an unused color, like pink or purple or dark blue.

  41. Here's my idea: We can have like, a settings in the family tree! It can show the generations, like you can have a button in the family tree that enables you to look at past generations! I tried to edit a thing, so here's how it looks in my mind: So, you can see the generations button down there. If you want to see your first, you click 1st and would get this! Holy crap I just spent so long editing this hhhhhhhhhhhhh. But this is a way I think you could get an endless generational tree! (I got a bit lazy with the last one, as you see the names are all the same.. but deal with it... I cant edit all those lines ahhhhhhhh)

  43. I am using version 0.3.2 I don't know if this is a bug exactly (or avoidable), but circuit elements do not seem to start simultaneously when a level is loaded. I have a button with an output which goes to XOR gate which goes to a not gate which activates a toggle. It seems that it takes a fraction of a second for the button to turn on when loading a level, which causes the not gate to be active for that very short duration.
