  1. I was working on the landscape generation of a new Biome when this happened. Is it a Kiwi (Animal)? Still lot of work ahead

  2. I call this one: STALIN (Because it dodges stuff and sends things to do its bidding) It works by dodging, and once in a safe spot launching a speedy drone that grabs the opponent and pushes them out of the ring. It is also really good at dodging on its own. I hope you like it.

  4. It would be nice to have more weather types in Niche, not only for immersion but for gameplay as well. The new antenna gene would also benefit from this change by having more weather to sense. I have compiled a list of possible new weather types below. Fog sight reduced by -2 white fur increases camouflage by +2 Thunderstorm all animals have a chance to be struck by lightning lightning has a chance to start a wildfire Hail all animals have a chance to be stunned animals are protected by taking shelter Suggestions on how these new weather types could be improved are welcome.

  5. So, I just randomly had an idea for a new gene. It would maybe look kind of like a snake head, with frills on the sides. If a creature comes within a certain range (maybe three or four spaces?) the nicheling with the gene has an option to spit at it. The creature would be poisoned, and wouldn't take damage right away. Perhaps you could make puddles on certain spots, and creatures who step in them (including nichelings) would be poisoned. Edit: Based on people's suggestions, I think that I should change it to instead paralyze the target for a day or two, although only a few turns for larger creatures. However, there is also a very small chance to poison the target. Edit 2: Should probably add some possible unlock conditions. I think that it would be unlocked after eating a certain number of toxic berries and licking a certain number of times. Another option could involve picking from the carnivorous plant.

  6. So, I've seen some people complain about the lack of use for underwater genes. So, I was thinking that perhaps there could be something like an atoll island, where the only land is a thin strip of beach with maybe some grass surrounding the "island", just in case you have nichelings that can't breathe underwater, and then the main part would be a giant pit in the middle, containing a coral reef. "Plants" Coral Bushes*- These would act similar to berry bushes, although wouldn't produce as much food and would look different. Water-breathing Coral- Normal coral that can sometimes be found in the game. Kelp- Normal kelp found in the game. Prey Parrastars- Parrastars would look kind of like a cross between a parrot fish and a sea star. They would eat the coral bushes, and if your nichelings attack them they get poisoned. Sea urchins- If you attack sea urchins, they can cause your nichelings to start bleeding, like a cactus. They are stationary. Normal fish- The normal kinds of fish you can currently find in-game. Predators *Eels- Eels could be found hiding inside some coral bushes. You should listen for them. When a nicheling gets close, the eel will lunge out and bite the nicheling, having a chance of removing all remaining turns. Shrids- Shrids would be attracted to bleeding nichelings. If a nichelings comes near it and isn't bleeding, then the shrid will ink them and run away. It looks kind of like a shark with large eyes and tentacles. Other Coral- You could also find coral that acts like rocks. An ability for Gills- some kind of ability that makes gills more viable as a head option. I am sorry if this is a bit too close to other ideas, this is mostly just a random idea for a single island (not all water in general).

  7. I think a really cool feature to have in the game would be scent marking so creatures can more efficiently separate into clans or tribes and make claims on territories. This could happen by a certain button on the keyboard (maybe P, would make sense but don't know if that already does something) that allows the creature to leave it's scent on the tile it's standing on. this 'scent' could then be seen in scent mode, maybe as the color of the gem the creature had who made it since different creatures would have different scents. I just thought of this right now so there's probably a lot of flaws in my idea, if anyone likes the idea of this or has some recommendations of how it could be fixed up to make more sense please let me know in the comments because I think this could be a cool addition to the game, especially for players with really large packs. Thanks for reading

  8. An interesting way to play this game is as a simulation of evolution, that is, with minimum input from yourself, to see what kind of form the nichelings would take based on their environment. This new mode beside story and sandbox would allow that playstyle to its full extent: As much or more pre-game customization as in sandbox mode, but AI-controlled nichelings ingame. You can: Look at their genetics, change the speed of the game (perhaps even automatic Day changes? If so, it should be disalbable), and a button to cause Migration (the youngest nichelings move to the Migration Plattform and then to the next Island). This way, Niche could serve as a simulator for evolution, population genetics, and ecology. The suggestion originally comes from my evo-devo prof who saw me and some friends play Niche in the cafeteria and started a conversation.

  9. I've had this issue quite a few times where a nicheling of mine will get hit on the head with the coconut and be stunned for that day. Which is fine, but then they get hit again the next day, and the next day, and the day after that. Once it happened so many times in a row that my newly grown nicheling had like, 10 less days to live via falling coconuts. I feel like there should be more of a delay between when they drop so you have the chance to move them out of the way instead of it happening day after day. This should only happen if you're just unlucky, but I've had it happen in several playthroughs so at this point I'm afraid whenever they run out of moves and happen to be under a palm tree. If you want more coconuts then you can just shake the tree, which all nichelings can do, so it wouldn't put a dent in food gathering. I'm not sure if this was fixed in the recent update, since it wasn't mentioned in the changelog.

  10. The weapon tech tree is awesome and I think the game could really benefit from more focus on melee as well. For example, we can have variants like on guns but on melee (cryogenic, kinetic, plasma, etc...) inflicting enemies with the effect upon impact. It would be cool to see damage upgrades and maybe something like knockback? so that when you hit enemies they can get pushed back. (This would also include TNT except for the knockback, but it would have some sort of explosion radius? or maybe different ways to detonate [Impact, timed, button]) Some new melee weapons would also be awesome to see, like maybe a spear (So like a spike but longer) I don't have many ideas for different melee weapons but I think the upgrades would definitely add a lot themselves.

  11. Hello! This is just a random idea I got! A grub trunk is a large fallen tree that is a tree trunk's height, and takes about 5 spaces. It is hollow inside, and has a decaying appearance. A grub trunk can fit baby niches and lean bodied creatures in it, however some grub trunks can be occupied by ram foxes or baby bearyenas, making it a bit risky unless you have well prepared nichelings. -Beaked nichelings can collect grubs from the grub trunk. -Nichelings with two nimble fingers can also collect grubs from the grub trunk. -Lean bodied, and baby niches can be fit into a grub trunk. -Eventaully a grub trunk will despawn/decay fully, in around 10-15 days. -Sometimes grub trunks may hold predators, or prey like rabbils.

  12. Ok this is actually more of a role-play aspect of the game. Perhaps there should be a little bubble that you can write stuff about that particular niche. Maybe about the most successful babies born to that niche, roles in the tribe, or just little reminders to breed that niche with another! It would be really helpful to me, who often forgets about breeding my best niches together, and it would be fun to make a little story in the progress!

  13. I like this, but I think stagmoles but no rabbils makes more sense since you are both underground and in the dark, and rabbils are more of a plains/forest animal. I would be weirded out if I walked into a cave and saw a bunch of rabbits hopping around, while I wouldn't be surprised to see a mole. I think the glowing mushrooms would be the main source of light for unfit nichelings. No matter how long you sit in the dark, your eyes will only adjust so much if you don't have nightvision of some sort. The glowing mushrooms would light up some parts of the cave and allow you to easily see, while other unlit parts would be completely dark and not visible unless the nicheling can see in the dark. I think this idea would work well with some sort of glow gene too.
    2 points
  14. I really like this idea. We could even add a new gene for night vision with which our creatures would be better at seeing in caves always (maybe shown by more lit up tiles) but in the overworld they would be really bad at seeing (like short sightedness). Why wouldn't we find moles since they live under the earth?

  15. It would be cool if there were different types of manes. Think of a nicheling with the mane of a lion! Here are my ideas: Small mane: Just few tufts of hair on the head +1 attractiveness Medium mane: The current mane +1 cold resistance Big mane: The mane of a lion +2 cold resistance -1 heat resistance +2 attractiveness Tuft mane: Like medium mane exept this comes with ear tufts and if you have medium tail, it gets a tail-tip-tuft and double effect. Females display eartufts (and tail tip) they also get effects. +1 hearing Double effect for medium tail + attractiveness Dominance order: Medium mane > Small mane > Big mane > Tuft mane Edit: 23rd of February 2020 Updated artwork! For comparison, no mane (so basically females with any mane type other than tuft-) Small/short mane: Medium mane: Big/lion mane: Tuft mane: (male:) (female:)

  16. Now I was thinking a cave island would be kinda cool, Stalactites and stalagmites.. Maybe a cool glowing cave mushroom.. Ok, I will get into more detail now. What it looks like: It is very dark inside at first, but with the passing of five days your nichelings get used to it. Upon leaving your nichelings will be half blinded by the light and it will be the same as when you entered the cave but with light. There are dark stone walls all around and the occasional dripping noise of water. There isnt much grass but there is the occasional bunch here and there. There are also some pools of water / puddles but with no life. The puddles act the same as in the swamp. Cave mushrooms: A glowing toxic mushroom that glows in four different colors: Green, yellow, purple, orange. You can eat them and by eating them you can earn toxic body. Batbirds: A replacement of bluebirds. They do the exact same thing but look different. They usually hang on the top of the cave where you cannot see them, but when a baby is in sight they start circling until the chance to snag it. They look like bats but with bluebird feathers on only the tops of their wings (Not like you will see the bottom) Stalagmites: Since stalactites are on the tops of caves, you wont see them. But there is the occasional stalagmite. Traveling to other islands: You go through one of three cave exits which are little openings in the cave wall, all you see through them is glowing white light. If you go through one of them then you go outside to a new port. You can either return inside or take the port. If you take the port you are allowed to choose nichelings to come with through the family tree. You just click them and select them, then they appear on the port with you. To do so, you have to click the stone as usual, but there will be a third option asking if you want to bring other nichelings. This is for the cave island only. Predators: You can find some wandering bearyenas, and baby bearyenas. Also there are random heaps of meat lying around from various different creatures. Prey: You can find rabbils but no moles. Also, if you will, can you suggest a new predator for the caves? I am out of ideas. Thanks!

  17. So, this would basically be a new pattern color with two possible outcomes: if a nicheling has only one copy of the gene, then their pattern glows in the other color present, and is purely aesthetic. If a nicheling has two copies of the gene, then it would glow in a random, bright color (like toxic body). Maybe having two copies would add +1 attractiveness out of water, and in water fish would come toward the bioluminescent nicheling.

  19. Having the ability to change the speed of a motorized hinge would be really cool, it would make for some very effective land vehicles ^-^ The lasers also have a weird way of splitting where its not centered if there is more then one beam, it feels kind of weird to work with so I feel it could benefit from a more symmetric split.

  20. Hey I was thinking about a Body Type that would overwrite the colors of a creature like Toxic Body does, but instead of standing out with intimidating warning colors, it would help the Nichelings to blend in perfectly with their enviroment: the Chameleon Body A chameleon changes his colors based on what they see to blend in so I suggest the colors would change depending on what biom-tile they are standing on. The pattern would still be the same (a spotted one would still be spotted, a striped striped...) but also change in color depending on the biom. I made a picture for illustration 5 times the same nicheling in different enviroments (I forgot the beach and the water but you hopefully get what I mean) I'd like if the body could be made to look slightly scaly instead of fluffy ^-^ It would give a lot of camouflage but has next to no other benefits, maybe heat resistance +1 or 2 but cold resistance -1 or 2 if anything Let me know what you think

  21. I made a Logic-Subdrone to control the thrusters and some LEDs on the core. Automated thrusters are working fine on the core-part, so the logical connection is there. But the LEDs that should show if the curser is left or right don't light up when only a Tag is "connected". But if a key is assigned to the LED the signal from the Tag is working just fine. 22. That is indeed an issue; a triple laser will not exactly target the mouse with the center beam, almost as if it uses the quad-beam offset for its targeting.

  23. Power hammer. damage and heavy knockback on contact. Impalement spikes that capture an enemy. (With an articulated arm, I can jam them into another melee weapon!) Paired blocks that activate a laser weapon between the two blocks. A mace that converts the delta between its vector and whatever it hits into better damage than simple collision. Lastly, a swordbreaker; basically a spike that immediately destroys weapon parts on contact.

  24. My tribe play is highly unorganized, but is mainly based on a name system, or at least is starting to be. Each future 'chief' has the suffix feather. I also try to limit how many Nichlings I have by having 20 at the most. I feel things are much harder to name and such if I do not do this. I am very picky about who I let in genetics wise, and will avoid any wandering Nichling that has more than one obvious problem with it. I also despise derp snout and will avoid it at all costs. I try to have Nichlings with nimble fingers as soon as possible as well, and like a diverse and healthy mix of genetics.

I may not be the greatest player, but I have fun with it. I am so far loving what all it has to offer, including the update beta. I also will have to look into the new game you all are doing soon as well since I had no idea you all were doing another one!

  26. I loved this idea so much I HAD to draw up a sketch before bed today I like the idea of it being an ancient gene, or at least one that's really hard to get, rather than giving it a cool down. The one I drew would, like the Derp Snout, not show what ears it has, showing the spade headpiece instead, but the dominant ears' stats would still apply, and like the Bearyena Snout it wouldn't have a mane. Also I gave it a blue toxic body because it's a squid, why not? I think the beak would be the same color as the horns, just like platypus beak and regular beak. Didn't know what to do with the suction cups, so I just made them pink in order to stand out from the rest of the body. I think on top of the spit ability it should also have +1 gathering and +1 cracking.

  31. The head shape for the gills seems to have a very shark-like look, and sharks are very very good at smelling, so it seems only fitting! Plus it isn't worth using the gills over the water body in the state it is in. For that matter, let fish be smellable! (another water gene that beeds a buff is the webbed paw, but I haven't thought about how exactly that can be buffed yet)

  32. It would be nice if you got a notification on the side menu whenever a nicheling got stunned by a falling coconut. If you click on the notification, it could say "One of your animals has been/is stunned (by a falling coconut)". Just like other notifications such as creatures bleeding or getting leeched, it would have a "show" button that would allow you to see which nicheling got stunned.

  33. While the male/female binary is rather common among mammals, Nichelings are not exactly mammals, right? Especially now that they could have amphibian, avian and even arthropoid features! Just like there is an mind-boggingly large number of lifeforms, there are dozens of ways sexes can work. There are fish that change sexes when there are not enough individuals of a certain sex, tapeworms that are male in young modules and female in older modules (or was it the other way around?), a wide range of hermaphroditic lifestyles, especially among plants and gastropods, and fungi with literally thousands of sexes. The diversity in sexes is ruefully underfeatured in Niche. (This moon wrasse is a protogynous sequential hermaphrodite. Image source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sequential_hermaphroditism#/media/File:Thalassoma_lunare_1.jpg) So, I suggest a new gene slot for sexes, with these genes: Binary: As it is now. This individual can be either male or female its whole life. Sequential: This individual changes its sex at one point in their life. Perhaps the halfway point? Or a random point? Or due to external factors, such as hunger? For the devs to decide. Could be seperated into protandry (male at first), protogyny (female at first), and bidirectional (either). Parthenogenetic: Female only. Reproduces asexually, that is, produces clones of itself. Might work better as a rare fertility gene. Hermaphroditic: A new sex . Can reproduce with anyone, excluding infertile individuals. Can also impregnate itself, which is not recommended. Scientifically called "simultanous hermaphrodity", but that's a bit long. Trinary: Can be either male, female, or hermaphroditic, with the latter being rarer than the former two. Perhaps a 40:40:20 ratio? Gynomonoecious: Can be either female or hermaphroditic. Andromonoecious: Can be either male or hermaphroditic. So, what do you think?

  35. I used to have the same problem, but the answer it to just take your time. Don't rush through the days and take time to look at the current genes and the mutation menu. If there's a gene you want, add it to that nicheling as a mutation (or try to breed it in. adding it as a mutation if they have it recessively gives you better chances too) Your starter nichelings will have different immunity genes, so breed them for a while, but not too much. If you only have 10 food, don't constantly pop out babies or your tribe will starve super fast. Have each baby find food and move them back to the nest if you plan to breed them. Stray nichelings have fresh genes that prevent the double-immunity illness that inevitably happens after so much inbreeding, so invite them in if things are running thin. You can survive on the starter island without inviting in strangers for a short while, but eventually you will need them. However -- this does not mean you should wait for offspring to have completely different genes before breeding them, it will put you in jeopardy. If you have two siblings with, say IJ and JI, you can breed them and there is still a chance that the offspring won't have JJ or II. If you have AB and BC, there's a chance you could get BB, but also a chance you can get AC, which could be vital if C isn't an immunity gene found in most of your nichelings. Sick nichelings aren't completely a loss though. If you have a AB nicheling and a breed with a sick CC nicheling, then you can get a healthy AC or BC baby. Basically be sure to take your time to look over your nichelings, and your run will go so much smoother. Don't do what I used to do and slowly panic when sick babies started appearing and starting zooming through trying to fix it.

  40. Sounds nice! Few suggestions: The day before a tree falls, it should have a crack in it's trunk so you could avoid it. Also it should make a cracking noise. You should be able to gather nestingmaterial and nuts from fallen trees but once they're empty, they're empty and will disappear. It would take 10 days for a fallen tree to despawn. They despawn faster if you collect from them. Also if you collec all they have to offer, they despawn during the next night. Armored body would protect the nicheling so it would only take damage from the hit. It would still be stuck under the tree and it would take damage every day until the tree despawns. Also it could protect baby nichelings by standing in between the tree and the baby. Stones would do the same thing.

  45. One way I could see this working is the toxic body, which is very froglike, giving your nichelings the ability to change their sex. I'm looking forward to seeing other peoples' take on this.

  46. Wouldn't that completely negate the function of the bluebirds, though? I think that the idea is solid but should be done differently. Instead of being able to carry an animal by the scruff, I think that something along the lines of a 'kangaroo body' would fit much better, since it still allows the bluebirds to retain their influence on game difficulty while providing a safe baby carrying method to some, but not all nichelings. A nicheling would have to have a kangaroo body in order to do this. There's my two cents

  47. Both works Whatever makes more sense to you. I think it would make sense that Armored Body becomes Armored Skin in this scenario. I'm super unsure how we could actually implement this though
    1 point
  48. Cool suggestion! The problem I see with this (which is a problem we have in general), is that the body also changes other body parts, such as the legs. Maybe the best solution here would be to add "Skin/Hair Types". So "Scales" would then the a type of skin. Other types could be long fur, no hair etc.
